If your business uses plastic bags — for takeaway, grocery packing, or retail checkout — there is a strong chance the bags you've been sourcing are now prohibited under Vietnamese law. Understanding exactly what has changed, and what to do about it, is no longer optional.
What the regulation actually bans
Vietnam's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation, effective from 1 January 2026, prohibits the manufacture and import of non-biodegradable plastic bags that fall within specific dimensions and thickness.
Banned specification — non-biodegradable plastic bags
50×50cm
Maximum size — bags smaller than this are prohibited
<50μm
Film thickness below 50 micrometres — the standard thin bag
In plain terms: the thin, lightweight bags most commonly handed out at supermarket checkouts, food stalls, and convenience stores are exactly what this regulation is targeting. They make up the bulk of Vietnam's plastic bag consumption — and they are now prohibited at the point of manufacture and import.
Which sectors are most affected
Retail & grocery
Food service & takeaway
Packaging & distribution
Businesses that have not yet started evaluating alternative sourcing are behind the timeline. The regulation is not forthcoming — it is already in effect. Supply chains that relied on conventional thin plastic bags need a certified replacement ready now.
What to look for in a compliant alternative
Not all "biodegradable" bags are created equal. When evaluating suppliers, look for products that meet every one of the following criteria — otherwise you risk trading one compliance problem for another.
-EPR-compliant in specification
-Product dimensions and material composition must meet EPR requirements — not just a general biodegradability claim.
-Certified biodegradable
-Independent certification from a recognised body — not self-declared. Look for internationally recognised standards.
-Verified zero-microplastics
-Confirmed free of plastic particles throughout the product lifecycle — not just in the virgin material.
-ISO 9001:2015 quality management
-Manufactured under a recognised QMS — ensures consistency, traceability, and supply reliability at scale.
Our bags are designed specifically for this transition — EPR-compliant, certified biodegradable, verified zero-microplastics, and manufactured under ISO 9001:2015. Certified, compliant, and ready to supply at scale.
The regulation is here. The sourcing decision shouldn't wait.
